Cracovia – Lech Poznań 1:2

In the pre-last league match of the season, Lech Poznań beat Cracovia 2:1 in an away clash. Gytkjaer and Marchwiński scored the goals for the guests. The win helped Lech secure a spot in Europa League qualifiers and they now need only one more league point to be crowned vice-champions.

So far this season, the clashes with Cracovia weren’t Lech’s favourite ones. The team from Poznań had yet to win a match in Cracow hence the players emphasised that they needed to put an end to this unfortunate series of poor games. The opening minutes of the clash were relatively dull; only Moder caused problems to Cracovia’s defensive line as the young midfielder tried surprising their keeper with shots from outside the box. Finally, 20 minutes in, Lech finally got a shot on target from inside the box and it was 1:0 for the club from Poznań. Puchacz was the author of a precise cross into the box and Gytkjaer converted it into a header that should have been easily saved by the keeper, but Peskovic’s mistake enabled the ball to roll into the net.

Following the goal, the match slowed down once again as the two teams fought for the ball in the midfield. After a short period of unexciting football, Moder forced this teammate to get back to work with a very strong, but slightly imprecise shot. The same player led a counterattack a few minutes later that Marchwiński converted into a flat on target; however, this time, the keeper intervened perfectly. Shortly before halftime, one of Cracovia’s players made a very poor pass that could have cost them another goal if it wasn’t the fact that Peskovic won a one-on-one clash with Gytkjaer.

Cracovia woke up in the second half and started creating good scoring chances. However, one of their offensive attempts was wasted by Jablonsky and another was successfully stopped by Satka. The match gradually slowed down until Skóraś appeared on the pitch and brought some fresh energy which resulted in a second goal. Szymański – who was debuting in Lech’s goal – sent a precise long pass to Skóraś who was located on the right flank. The youngster raced down the wing, won a clash with one of the defenders, and set up Marchwiński with a perfect pass in the box. The striker sent the ball into the net with a strong shot under the crossbar.

Just when it seemed that Lech had everything under control, they scored an own goal. Crnomarković pass to Szymański was too strong, especially considering the wet pitch, and in the direction of the goal. The keeper failed to stop it as it slipped under his foot and rolled into the net. The team from Poznań had a great chance to increase the advantage to two goals but Skóraś sent the ball right into the goalkeeper’s hands. Cracovia was determined to win at least a point but they failed to score again which meant that Lech added three important points to their account. As a result, the team from Poznań is going to play in Europa League qualifiers next season and have a chance to finish the league season on the second position.
