Michał Gurgul met with journalists before departing for Gliwice for the Polish Cup clash with Piast. “On Monday, we had a recovery session and a balancing training session. On Tuesday, we’ll have a briefing specifically focused on our opponent. But we’re definitely going there to secure a place in the quarter-finals,” said Lech’s left-footed defender.
Gurgul has maintained excellent form, despite having played a significant number of matches. In just over a month - since October 26th - he has played nine games, for Lech and the Polish youth national team, all from the first to the last minute. Hence, he was asked whether he feels he has won the competition for a place in the line-up against João Moutinho.
“Let’s not rush with saying I’ve won the competition, because there is competition - and strong competition at that. João keeps pushing me all the time. My good form is the result of constant hard work and the fact that there was a period when I played less. That was a time that additionally motivated me to work even harder, and thanks to that, I’ve reached the level of form I’m showing on the pitch today. As for the elements I’ve improved recently, I’d definitely point to my crosses – they’re getting better and better. I also take set pieces,” explained the 19-year-old.
After two wins in a row, Lech drew 0:0 in the Ekstraklasa match against Wisła Płock. “What we lacked above all was a goal. We struggled to create clear chances. Against a deep-lying defence, it’s always difficult. That was the main reason we didn’t score. And despite our efforts and our dominance over the 90 minutes, we returned to Poznań with just one point,” Gurgul commented.
Niels Frederiksen’s squad has no time for relaxed training, as they set off for Upper Silesia on Tuesday, where they will play in the Polish Cup against Piast Gliwice on Wednesday. “On Monday, we had a recovery session and a balancing training session. On Tuesday, we’ll have a briefing specifically focused on our opponent. But we’re certainly going there to reach the quarter-finals,” assured the left-footed defender.
