Dejewski debuts for the first team

The clash with Lechia Gdansk had few things that Lech’s fans could be particularly happy or proud about, however, Dejewski’s debut for the senior team was one of the positive highlights of the Saturday match. The homegrown footballer joined Lech’s academy back in 2011 and after adventurous 8 years, his dream of playing for the senior team came true.

In the 8th league match of the season, Lech Poznan was beaten by Lechia Gdansk 1:2. It was the first half that had the biggest impact on the final score since the players from the seaside managed to score twice in the first 45 minutes, which forced Lech to chase the rival until the final whistle. “Obviously it’s a pity we conceded the two goals because they decided about the whole match. I think that we didn’t fulfil our tactical plan; we didn’t perform the way we were instructed to by our coach. In the beginning, we played poorly, and then Christian’s goal gave us extra motivation to keep on fighting. We came back for the second half hopeful and ready to play more offensive football based on high pressing, but despite the fact that we had our chances, we failed to change the score,” explained Dejewski.

In the clash with Lechia, Djordje Crnomarković and Thomas Rogne were positioned in the middle of the defensive line and when Volodymyr Kostevych was injured, the Serbian defender moved to the left flank and Dejewski came in to fill the gap. For the 24-year-old full-back it was an extraordinary moment in his football career – not only was he named a part of the 18-men match squad for the very first time, but he also managed to debut in the same game. However, the joy of making his dream come true was diminished by the final score.

“I am very happy to have debuted, but since we lost, it doesn’t really matter. I’d rather not have debuted at all and come back home with three points. All I can do is keep on training hard, try to earn a place in the squad, and fight to win every next match,” commented the defender.

Tomasz Dejewski was born in Grudziadz and in 2011 he moved from the local club Olimpia to Lech’s academy. At first, he played for youth teams which competed in Mloda Ekstraklasa until in season 2013/14 he was moved to the first-team squad. For the next 3 years, he strengthened the reserves team, appearing in 75 matches and scoring 10 goals in total. Next, Dejewski joined Warta Poznan on loan where he played over 50 games. After a year’s time, the defender moved to Warta permanently and kept on appearing on the pitch regularly. However, life had other plans for Dejewski and the player eventually returned to Lech, where until now, he was representing the B team in the second division.
